Why is preventative dental health important?
Your dentist may be the key to early diagnosis of a serious disease. Regular dental visits are important because while your teeth, mouth, and gums will get a good cleaning, your dentist can also spot other general health problems such as:
- Oral and Other Cancers– In addition to oral cancer checks, dentists may be able to spot bone and other tumors in oral x-rays leading to early cancer detection.
- Diabetes –Out of control sugar levels can show up in your mouth with bleeding, swelling, and sensitivity. If your dentist spots these symptoms, he may refer you to your primary care doctor for a diabetes check.
- Nighttime Reflux-Reflux of stomach juices can happen at night and you may not be aware of it. If your dentist notices erosion of enamel from the insides of teeth, he may recommend you see your primary to check for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
- Dry Mouth-If you are not producing enough saliva, your dentist will know. Saliva helps wash away bacteria that lead to gum disease and cavities. Your dentist may recommend that you increase your fluid intake or suggest a saliva substitute.
While your dentist can spot health issues in other parts of your body, taking care of your teeth and regular cleanings are a vital part of overall health.
Your mouth is a breeding ground of germs and bacteria that can get into the bloodstream and cause infection and inflammation, so it is important to practice good oral hygiene. See your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups to protect your beautiful smile and your overall health.
